If you are staying in Argelès-sur-Mer at the end of June, don’t miss the traditional Feast of Saint John, a festive event marking the arrival of summer in Catalonia.
Every year on the evening of June 23rd, Catalonia celebrates the Feast of Saint John, one of the most important traditions in the region. It is a festive evening marking the beginning of summer and bringing together locals and visitors around bonfires, music, and entertainment.
The tradition begins with the famous Flame of Canigou, a symbol of Catalan culture. Carried from the summit of Mount Canigou, it travels across Catalonia to light the Saint John’s bonfires in many towns and villages.
In Argelès-sur-Mer, the flame arrives on June 23rd for a large festive evening at Place Gambetta. From 7 p.m., a variety of Catalan-themed activities are offered: singing by bilingual class students, demonstrations of sardana dancing, traditional Catalan songs, and a parade of Catalan giants.
Around 10 p.m., the Flame of Canigou ignites the large Saint John’s bonfire, traditionally fueled with the “ramallets” from the previous year. This symbolic moment is always highly anticipated and marks the beginning of the night’s festivities.
The evening continues in a warm and friendly atmosphere with tastings of rousquilles and muscat wine offered to the public, followed by a large festive concert to celebrate the arrival of summer together.
A wonderful opportunity to discover Catalan traditions and experience an authentic moment during your holiday in Argelès-sur-Mer.
